Dorchester District Scout Council
Young Leaders

In order to become a Young Leader (YL) in Scouting, you must be aged between 14 and 18 years.

You do not have to attend District Explorer meetings if you do not want to!  But you will be invited to attend their events; and, may take part in any of their Award Schemes, including the Duke of Edinburgh.

You will meet as your own Section about 3 to 4 times a year, on an evening; or, at the weekend – you decide!

As a YL you are then allowed to work with the younger aged sections of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to develop your own leadership skills.

However, if you leave your Troop to become a YL, you are not permitted to return to it until 6 months have lapsed.

Whilst working as a YL, you are required to carry out some training of your own in a modular form.  They are as follows:-

A:  Prepare for take off!
This must be completed within 3 months of becoming a Young Leader; and, looks at the very basics of Scouting.
B:  Taking the lead!
This is looking at leadership styles.
C:  That’s the way to do it!
Different ways of presenting.
D:  Kids behaving badly
How to deal with and causes of bad behaviour.
E:  Game on!
Not just for play, but using games to provide learning.
F:  Special People
Working with special needs.

G:  Programme plans

H:  Programme plans plus

Each of these units look at balanced programmes.
I:  What did they say?
How to communicate effectively.
J:  Awards and Badges
Awards and training schemes in each of the sections.
K:  First Aid Masterclass
Obtain a First Aid qualification.
